In this section - which is not yet written - we will publish articles about journalism in the 19th century. This will mostly concern Great Britain - dealing with the rise of the cities, urbanisation, industrial production and growing mass literary.
This section will deal with newspapers such as the Times and the News of the World and how they grew. The links to poitics, empire, trade and migration will also be explored. One very interesting aspect will be the role of the press in the settlement of the American west, and the role of the pres in events such as the revolutions of 1848, the American Gold Rush, the American Civil war and the spread of trade, empire and British power.
The articles will be researched and written by students during the 2009-2010 academic session and will grow to be a considerable resource for students, journalists and academics.
